Never Lose Hope

As we draw close to the end of a year or an era, there is normally some reflection about the choices we made, the things we did or did not do and possibly the people with whom we connected or didn’t. The books of Deuteronomy and Joshua also give us some of the reflections of both Moses and Joshua respectively. Both men encouraged the people of Israel to look back on where God had brought them from, and to be faithful in serving Him throughout their lives (Deut. 1 – 3; Joshua 24).

When we look back at the year 2021, when we reflect on where the Lord has brought us from, it is hard not to shout in praise like the psalmist, David. There were struggles, moments of despair and loss, but God in His wisdom has spared us! It was not because of our own efforts, but because of His amazing grace. What a merciful God! Therefore we must never lose hope! In, through, despite, and after our circumstances we can still “sing unto Him, sing psalms unto Him: talk ye of all His wondrous works…” Psalm 105:2 KJV.

So what should be our response when the trials and challenges come? Here are some suggestions on how we can keep hope alive, not just for ourselves but also for those whose lives we touch.

1. Thank God for His grace that brought us this far (Psalm 106:1-3, KJV). Sing His praises and honour Him in our worship and actions each day. God has been faithful!
(Lam 3:23)

2. Let us remember, as we gather with our family, friends and colleagues, to extol the goodness of God in 2021 and encourage them for the New Year. We may not know what the year will bring but we know the God who knows the future (Jer. 29:11, KJV).

3. Commit to sharing with your children, God’s leading in your life. Help them to understand who God is – not a genie to grant wishes, but a God who made them, loves them and has a plan for their future (Deut. 4:9 KJV).

4. Recommit to walking with the Lord. The servant of the Lord reminds us, that “by yielding up your will to Christ, you … will have strength from above to hold you steadfast, and thus through constant surrender to God, you will be enabled to live the new life, even the life of faith”.
(Steps to Christ, pg. 48).

As Moses and Joshua encouraged the Israelites, let us also use this time of reflection to encourage each other to keep always in active readiness, remembering how God has led us through these years. Pray with and for each other; call and check up on your neighbours; ask God to show you the need of someone and to equip you to assist with that need.

Heaven is our goal and the coming of our Lord and Saviour draws near! Never lose hope – for He that is to come, WILL COME!
